Mrs. Sarah Edwards dies at 88 years; leaves 137 Direct Descendants.
Funeral services were held September 6 at Upper Cane Creek Church for Mrs. Sarah Edwards, one of the county's oldest citizens. She was a resident of Route 1, Fruithurst.
Rev. David Croft, Rev. Harold McKensey, Rev. John Wells, Rev. Jack Marks officiated at the service. Burial was in the church cemetery with Cantrell in charge.
Mrs. Edwards died September 4 at her home. She was a member of one of the county's oldest and largest families and the widow of John Steve Edwards. They had 14 children of whom 11 lived to adulthood.
Families of the deceased children are Mrs. Della Edwards of Bell Mill, Mrs. H. A. Kerr of Heflin and J. B. Willingham, whose family lives in Atlanta.
The eight children still living are S. A. Edwards, Heflin; B. S. Edwards, Cullman; Lee A. Edwards, Sheffield; Mrs. Homer Connell, Heflin; Mrs. Noah Connell, Fruithurst; Mrs. Nancy E. Sides, Fruithurst; Mrs. J. T. Parker, Fruithurst; Mrs. Leonard C. Cheatwood, Edwardsville. There are also 52 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Edwards was a member of Upper Cane Creek Church since 1909 and was active in her work until her health started to fail about four years ago.
Active pallbearers were grandsons: John Willingham, Allen Edwards, Clyde Edwards, Milton Kerr, Alfred Lee Cheatwood, Earnest Edwards, James Connell, Roy Connell.
Honorary pallbearers were: Robert Abney, Clifford Ray, C. M. Hughes, Rev. N. G. Ray, Cyril Hughes, W. C. Cheatwood, Hubert Ferguson and Euell Jones.
