  Valentine "Sally" Murphy was born about 1780 in Surry County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Rev. Joseph Murphy and Valentine Haley. She grew up in Surry County and on May 23, 1797, she married John Rutledge there. They soon moved to Clark County, Kentucky and had nine children there. Sally died about 1825 in Clark County.
