Notes - Jemima married 15 December 1831 in Indiana to widower John A. Speer (1790-about 1842), son of Andrew Speer & Elizabeth Murphy; 2 children: Robert Davis Speer & Lydia Speer. (Robert may be the Robert D. Speer, born 1835 in Indiana; died 1899 in Illinois; during the Civil War he enlisted in Company C, Iowa 3rd Cavalry Regiment on 16 Mar 1864; mustered out on 09 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, GA; buried Chili Township Cemetery, Hancock County, Illinois. Robert married 26 September 1869 at Adams, Illinois, to Mrs. Margaret Guin.)
Jemima married 2nd on 22 October 1843 in Mercer County, Illinois to Amaziah Murphy; 2 sons: William & Lucien, who both served in the Civil War. Amaziah died 18 September 1847; his coffin cost $12.50. (A lot of money then! Today, that would equal $313.24.) In the appraisal of his estate, his black mare was valued at $40 and his bald-faced horse at $25. One cow & calf, $10; 1 2-yr-old heifer $6; 11 head of hogs $22; 4 shoats (A young pig just after weaning) $3; 13 small shoats $6.50; 15 acres corn @2.50=$37.50; 4 acres wheat in ground $5; 15 acres corn @1.50=$22.50; set harness $6; saddle $2; wagon $18; 2 shovel plows $4.50; 7 pieces cooking utensils $2; old brass kettle $.50; andirons & tongues $.37-1/2; cupboard & wares $10; table $2.50; 7 chairs $1.75; settee $1; kitchen table .50; 3 bedsteads & bedding thereof $20; cradle & sythe $1.50; 1 clock .25; hand saw .50; hay fork .37-1/2; one rifle gun $5; 2 hoes .62-1/2; Total $254.87-1/2
Family tradition says Jemima was raised a Quaker, but was disowned by the Friends when she married a non-Quaker. (how un-Friendly of them!) I do not know where she is buried; she may be in Davis cemetery with her parents & siblings. Her second husband Amaziah Murphy may be there, too.
